Government officials would compensate Rs 30 lakh to families of individuals who pass away while clearing sewers: Supreme Court

The Supreme Court ruled that the government would be liable for up to Rs 10 lakh in case the worker develops additional infirmities.

The Supreme Court declared on Friday that government agencies would have to compensate the families of people who pass away while cleaning sewers with a sum of Rs 30 lakh, taking a somber view of the occurrences of sewer deaths that have occurred across the nation.

The division bench of Justice S Ravindra Bhat and Justice Aravind Kumar stated that a minimum compensation of Rs 20 lakh would be given to individuals who sustain lifelong disability while cleaning sewers.

“The Union and the state governments must ensure that manual scavenging is completely eradicated,” the bench said.

The bench issued other directives that were not read aloud, directing government agencies to work together to prevent future occurrences of this kind and allowing High Courts to continue overseeing instances involving sewage deaths.
