A boatman’s family from Arail village, Prayagraj, has been issued an income tax notice of Rs. 12.8 crore after earning an astonishing Rs. 30 crore by ferrying pilgrims during the Maha Kumbh Mela.
The revelation, made by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in the state assembly, has sparked widespread discussions online.
Boatman’s Unprecedented Earnings at Kumbh Mela
Pintu Mahara and his family, who typically struggle to earn ₹15,000 per month, capitalized on the massive influx of pilgrims at the Triveni Sangam during the religious festival. Operating around 130 boats over 45 days, the family witnessed an exponential increase in income, charging approximately ₹1,000 per ride, compared to their usual ₹500 with only one or two rides daily.
Income Tax Notice Under Sections 4 and 68
Despite their unexpected financial success, the family has now been served a notice under Sections 4 and 68 of the Income Tax Act, 1961, requiring them to pay ₹12.8 crore in taxes. This development has reportedly left the Mahara family in distress, as they were unaware of tax obligations related to such substantial earnings.
Expert Opinions on the Taxation Burden
SEBI research analyst A.K. Mandhan shared insights on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), highlighting the financial burden placed on Mahara due to a lack of awareness about tax slabs and regulations. Mandhan emphasized that while the earnings were significant, the sudden tax liability has turned the windfall into a financial challenge.
Public Reaction and Government’s Stance
The incident has ignited debates on tax literacy, financial planning, and the taxation of seasonal or temporary high-income earners. Many online users argue that the family, unfamiliar with tax laws, should be provided with financial guidance rather than penalized with a massive tax bill.
As discussions continue, experts suggest that authorities should focus on educating individuals about taxation, especially those experiencing sudden financial gains, to ensure compliance without undue hardship.
