In a major breakthrough against gold smuggling, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Bengaluru, has arrested popular Kannada actress Ranya Rao at Kempegowda International Airport. The arrest follows the seizure of a staggering 14.8 kg of gold from her possession late Monday night.
Ranya, who arrived on an Emirates flight from Dubai, was under the radar of the DRI due to her frequent international travel patterns. Investigators revealed that she had managed to discreetly wear a significant portion of the gold while also hiding gold bars in her clothing to evade detection.
Authorities have uncovered a startling connection in the case, as Ranya is the daughter of a serving DGP-rank IPS officer in Karnataka. This revelation has triggered an investigation into whether she had any institutional backing or if law enforcement personnel were knowingly or unknowingly involved in the smuggling operation.
According to preliminary findings, Ranya allegedly leveraged her father’s high-ranking position to bypass security checks. Reports suggest that upon arrival, she would identify herself as the daughter of the senior IPS officer and call on local police personnel to escort her home, possibly facilitating the smuggling operation.
The DRI is currently interrogating Ranya to uncover details regarding the smuggling network and her role in it. The involvement of other individuals, including airport and law enforcement officials, is also under scrutiny.
Despite the high-profile nature of the case, the DRI has yet to release an official statement. Authorities are expected to issue a formal announcement soon, shedding more light on the extent of the smuggling ring and the possible legal consequences for the actress.
