Massive Seizure Of Smuggled Foreign Cigarettes in Assam

Date:

In a major crackdown on smuggling, officers of the Directorate of Prevention of Fraud (DPF), Guwahati, seized a massive consignment of foreign-origin cigarettes on Tuesday. The operation, conducted at the premises of M/s Gati Express & Supply Chain Pvt. Ltd in Changsari, Assam, resulted in the confiscation of 2,80,000 sticks of illegally imported Mond & Esse cigarettes, valued at approximately Rs 73.50 lakhs.

The seizure marks a significant step in curbing the illegal tobacco trade, which has been on the rise due to the high taxation on legal tobacco products. Smuggled cigarettes often evade import duties and fail to comply with India’s stringent health regulations, posing economic and public health risks.

According to officials, the operation was based on specific intelligence inputs, leading to a swift and well-coordinated raid at the logistics facility. Authorities are now investigating the supply chain to identify the individuals and networks involved in the smuggling operation.

Further legal proceedings are underway, and enforcement agencies are expected to make arrests in connection with the case. Officials have reiterated their commitment to cracking down on illicit trade and ensuring compliance with anti-smuggling laws.

This seizure comes amidst growing concerns over the influx of contraband goods into the region. Authorities have urged businesses and logistics firms to maintain vigilance and report any suspicious activities related to smuggled goods.
