‘Gyanvapi Judge’ Appointed As CESTAT’s Judicial Member

The President of India has appointed Shri Ajaya Krishna Vishvesha, Retd. District and Sessions Judge, Varanasi, who is also known as Gyanvapi Judge, to the post of Member (Judicial) in Customs, Excise and Service Tax Appellate Tribunal (CESTAT).

The government notified the salary of Rs. 2,25,000 per month, with effect from the date of assumption of charge of the post at CESTAT, Ahmedabad, for a period of 04 years, or till attaining the age of 67 years, whichever is earlier, in terms of Tribunal (Conditions of Service) Rules, 2021 read with Tribunal Reforms Act, 2021 published on 13.08.2021.

The officer is required to take charge of the post of Member (Judicial) at Ahmedabad bench of Customs, Excise and Service Tax Appellate Tribunal (CESTAT) within a week from the date of occurrence of this vacancy i.e. between 13.12.2024 and 20.12.2024. He is also requested to submit his medical fitness from an authority specified by the Central Government before assuming charge of the post as Member (Judicial) in the Tribunal.

DJ Ajay Krishna Vishwesha is retired Varanasi District and Sessions. He ordered a “scientific survey” of the Gyanvapi mosque by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and subsequently allowed the Hindu side to offer prayers at the southern cellar of the complex before he retired from service on January 31, has been appointed as the Lokpal of the state government-run Dr Shakuntala Misra National Rehabilitation University, Lucknow.

On the last day of his service as district judge, Varanasi, on Jan 31, 2024, he ordered resumption of puja inside the southern cellar of Gyanvapi Masjid which was closed since December 1993.

Retired district judge Ajaya Krishna Vishvesha, who heard Gyanvapi-related cases for nearly two years, has been appointed Lokpal of Dr Shakuntala Misra National Rehabilitation University, Lucknow. Appointed by the university administration as per the UGC guidelines for a period of three years.
