Allahabad High Court Bar Association Suspends Strike Amid Inquiry Against Justice Yashwant Varma

Date:

The Allahabad High Court Bar Association has decided to suspend its ongoing strike protesting the transfer of Justice Yashwant Varma from the Delhi High Court to the Allahabad High Court. This decision follows the formation of a three-member inquiry committee investigating allegations surrounding the judge.

Judicial Work Boycott Suspended Until Inquiry Report

In a resolution passed on March 29, the Association stated that the strike would remain suspended until the inquiry committee submits its findings. Justice Varma became the center of controversy after burnt wads of cash were discovered at his official residence in Delhi following a fire incident.

The High Court Bar Association emphasized that the suspension is temporary, and further decisions will be made after reviewing the inquiry report. Consequently, judicial work at the Allahabad High Court is set to resume on Tuesday, April 1, 2025.

Lawyers to Boycott Oath-Taking Ceremony

Despite suspending the strike, the Association has resolved that its members will not attend Justice Yashwant Varma’s oath-taking ceremony. Additionally, the Association is gearing up for a national-level press conference in Prayagraj on April 26-27, 2025, to rally support from other High Court Bar Associations across India.

Key Decisions Taken by the Allahabad HC Bar Association:

  • Judicial work boycott suspended until the inquiry report is released.
  • Judicial work to resume from April 1, 2025.
  • Photo Identification Center to be reopened to facilitate litigants and advocates.
  • A national-level press conference scheduled in Prayagraj on April 26-27, 2025, to garner support from other Bar Associations.

Supreme Court Refuses FIR Against Justice Varma

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court of India declined to entertain a writ petition seeking the registration of an FIR against Justice Yashwant Varma regarding the alleged illicit cash discovery at his Delhi residence.

Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna has instructed the Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court not to assign any judicial work to Justice Varma while the in-house inquiry continues.

Justice Yashwant Varma’s Transfer and Background

Justice Yashwant Varma, originally from the Allahabad High Court, was transferred to the Delhi High Court in 2021. His recent re-transfer to Allahabad High Court has sparked significant opposition from the legal community.

With ongoing inquiries and nationwide legal discourse, this case remains a focal point in India’s judicial landscape. Stay tuned for further updates as the situation develops.
