The Delhi High Court has officially withdrawn judicial work from Justice Yashwant Varma with immediate effect following allegations regarding the discovery of unaccounted cash at an outhouse within his residential premises. The decision was announced through a notice published on the official website of the Delhi High Court.
Supreme Court’s Directive and In-House Inquiry Committee
The Supreme Court had earlier directed the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court not to assign any judicial work to Justice Yashwant Varma. In response to these developments, the Chief Justice of India has constituted a three-member committee to conduct an inquiry into the allegations, as part of the in-house procedure.
The members of the inquiry committee include:
- Justice Sheel Nagu, Chief Justice of the Punjab & Haryana High Court
- Justice GS Sandhawalia, Chief Justice of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh
- Justice Anu Sivaraman, Judge of the High Court of Karnataka
Justice Varma’s Denial of Allegations
Justice Yashwant Varma has strongly denied all allegations in his response submitted to Delhi High Court Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya. He has stated that the allegations are part of a conspiracy to frame him.
Additionally, Justice Varma clarified that the room where the alleged unaccounted cash was reportedly found is not part of his official residence but a separate storeroom that is disconnected from the main premises. He has also dismissed reports suggesting that any cash was ever placed in the storeroom, refuting claims made in a Times of India report.
What Lies Ahead?
With judicial work withdrawn and an ongoing inquiry, the future of Justice Varma’s position remains uncertain. The findings of the in-house committee will play a crucial role in determining the next steps in this high-profile case.
